First, to state the obvious: I was off the grid last week. My dad — who I was very close with — passed away unexpectedly late last Saturday night and I needed to take the week to focus on my family.

From a work perspective, the timing was less than ideal since it coincided with both the start of the college season and the early signing period. So, I need to begin this piece by recognizing the special people I work with for picking up the slack. Not only did they allow me to take time away from work, they encouraged me to take the time I needed to be with my family.

Over the course of the week, I found myself turning to basketball for a distraction. I typically follow all levels of the sport, from the NBA down to high school and recruiting. Last week was no different. Except during this time, I was doing it for sheer entertainment, not because I had some sort of content planned and/or attached to the game.

This different approach to watching basketball opened me up, allowing a number of things to catch my eye.

So, allow me to share seven observation from my seven days of watching hoops:
