Michigan landed a commitment from quarterback Carter Smith Tuesday, and jumped from No. 19 to No. 12 in the 2025 class rankings, usurping Big Ten foes Wisconsin, Nebraska and Purdue along the way. Smith was in Ann Arbor for Michigan's victory over Purdue and chose the Wolverines over an offer list that includes Florida, Florida State, Miami, Louisville, NC State, Ole Miss, Penn State and Texas A&M.

"I fit their scheme offensively, and I'll be able to really develop as a quarterback there," Smith said. "Quality of people there, everyone was very down to earth and very welcoming. I had a good meeting with coach (Jim) Harbaugh and spent quite a bit of time with Coach (Kirk) Campbell."

The Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot signal caller joins four-star cornerback Chris Ewald and three-star defensive lineman Bobby Kanka in Michigan's class. The Wolverines' three commits boast an average rating of 92.27, the fifth-best mark in the cycle behind Alabama, Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State (min. three commits).

Smith ranks as the No. 14 quarterback and No. 36 prospect in the state of Florida. He is a four-star in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He completed more than 60% of his passes through 34 games during his three-year varsity career and has amassed nearly 7,000 yards passing and 69 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,878 yards and 41 more scores. He threw 25 touchdowns to one interception and tacked on another 16 rushing scores through 10 games as a junior.

"An athletic quarterback prospect with an impressive baseball background that will exit high school having played a ton of varsity snaps," 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins wrote. "A bit unorthodox as a passer with a lower release point, but makes things happen more times than not, showing plenty of field command. He has operated primarily out of a pro-style spread attack the past few years and found tons of success coordinating run-pass options as he can evade defenders and change directions while keeping his eyes downfield."

Smith is a developmental prospect with the "tools to win games at the Power Five level," according to Ivins.

"Can generate plenty of whip and attack the sticks, but must get more consistent with his ball placement as he tends to miss low," Ivins wrote. "Improved touch on his deep shots could also unlock some things. Should be viewed as a mobile signal caller that can win from the pocket if he can stay in rhythm and on schedule. Likely going to need some time to develop, but has tools to win games at the Power Five level."
